The Difference Between Internal and External Frame Backpacks

Internal and external frame backpacks are two different types of outdoor backpacks. Internal frame backpacks are the mainstream type in the current market for hiking and rock climbing, offering numerous advantages. External frame backpacks have gradually faded in popularity over the years, but they still have certain advantages and continue to play an important role in specific areas.

As a professional outdoor sports backpack manufacturer, USLiNT has a clear understanding of these two types of backpacks. Let us explain them in detail.

Definition

An internal frame backpack is one that contains an internal support frame (such as aluminum rods or plastic plates). This support frame is typically embedded within the backpack’s back panel, creating a more streamlined appearance.

An external frame backpack has a separate, external metal frame, with the backpack body simply suspended from the frame.

How it Works

We know that the majority of a backpack’s weight should be borne by the hips to minimize fatigue. Internal frame backpacks use an internal frame to transfer the weight of the backpack to the hip belt, allowing the backpack to better conform to the curve of your back and bring the center of gravity closer to a natural position, making carrying easier.

External frame backpacks, on the other hand, primarily rely on the external frame to bear the majority of the weight. This higher center of gravity shifts the weight more towards the lower body, ensuring a more stable walking posture.

Weight and Size

Internal frame backpacks are generally more compact and lighter, making them easier to carry and fit into airplane and car luggage compartments.

External frame backpacks are larger and heavier than internal frame backpacks, and due to the external frame, they are not easy to fit into airplane and car luggage compartments.

Storage and Loading

Internal frame backpacks offer ample internal space, allowing you to fit most of your belongings, but it’s important to note that these items must fit within the internal frame’s dimensions. Internal frame backpacks generally open upwards and have fewer internal compartments. Therefore, it’s important to organize your belongings from top to bottom to avoid clutter while traveling. Alternatively, you can pack your belongings in packing bags or compression bags beforehand and then store them inside the internal frame.

External frame backpacks, in addition to the main compartment, also have numerous side pockets, making it easy to organize small items like a compass and sunglasses. Larger gear, such as trekking poles, sleeping bags, and tents, can be attached to the external frame.

Comfort

Internal frame backpacks conform better to your back, bringing your center of gravity closer to its natural position. The adjustable hip strap provides stability and prevents shifting during movement, making them naturally easier to carry. However, it’s important to note that the tight fit prevents airflow between the back panel and your body, making it easier to get hot and sweaty during exercise and walking, which is detrimental to comfort.

While external frame backpacks can also shift the load to the lower body, they are suitable for a limited range of heights, and the shoulder and hip belts are generally not easily adjustable, making them difficult to secure and conform to your body, making them less comfortable to carry than internal frame backpacks. However, because external frame backpacks maintain a certain distance from your back, they offer better ventilation and prevent sweat buildup.

Suitable Applications

Because internal frame backpacks can be adjusted for stability and are less prone to slipping while walking, they are well-suited for activities like rock climbing, mountaineering, and other activities that require frequent weight shifting. Furthermore, their airtight seal makes them less susceptible to snagging, making them ideal for activities like jungle trekking and adventure.

Compared to internal frame backpacks, external frame backpacks have a higher and more rearward center of gravity, making them prone to top-heavy movement and swaying. Therefore, they are unsuitable for activities like rock climbing and mountaineering, but they are suitable for hiking and traveling. Furthermore, due to their bulk and exposed frame, which requires much luggage to be attached externally, they are susceptible to scratches and snagging, making them unsuitable for activities like jungle trekking and other intense activities.

Durability

Internal frame backpacks primarily rely on straps and seams to support weight, while external frame backpacks rely primarily on an external metal frame. Therefore, external frame backpacks are more durable than internal frame backpacks. However, with advancements in fabric manufacturing and stitching technology, internal frame backpacks have significantly improved their durability, allowing them to carry heavier weights and adapt well to intense outdoor activities.

Price

Prices vary by brand and style. However, when comparing internal and external frame backpacks from the same brand, internal frame backpacks are more expensive than external frame backpacks. Customized backpacks also have different pricing options, depending on your needs.

These are the differences between internal and external frame backpacks; you can choose the right one based on your needs. We’re also happy to share that USLiNT understands the current market demand for internal frame backpacks and plans to develop high-quality and innovative internal frame backpacks.
